The Food Safety Department has collected samples of cardamom to test for chemical colouring. Benny Joseph, assistant commissioner, Food Safety Department, told The Hindu on Friday that an awareness campaign among the farmers had been launched in association with the Spices Board of India against chemical colouring. However, farmers go for colouring, lured by high prices for the ‘first grade’ cardamom at the auction centres.
The quality of cardamom is decided by its colour, shape, size and oil content. ‘Alleppey Green’ is considered the best by the buyers and farmers tend to add colour to make the crop resemble Alleppey Green.
Our cardamom is naturally green, chemical colour free and full of aroma.
